The Carpenter Ant can be one of the most destructive pests we have in West Michigan. And, although we all love the beauty of the woods and forests of West Michigan, all that wood makes the perfect habitat for the Carpenter Ant.
Carpenter Ants don’t eat wood. They only use it as nests. They hollow out galleries that they can locate their colonies in. In nature, they provide a beneficial service by speeding the decay of our wood lots, but when they enter our homes, they can do extensive damage. Carpenter ants occupy wood that has a high moisture content. They can also live in logs or trees outside our homes then seek food or shelter once they find entry into our interior or walls.
The Carpenter Ant is one of the largest ants in West Michigan. It is typically black in color but can also be dark brown, red or have an orange hue. These ants range from ¼” to ¾” in length. Some of the steps we can take as homeowners to reduce the probability of Carpenter Ants invasion is to keep all shrubbery trimmed from wall contact, keep tree branches pruned from the roofs and siding and repair any water management issue that could be causing high moisture content in our home’s structure. Carpenter Ants can be just as destructive as termites if left untreated. Read more about them here.
